The Nutcracker Story:
The Nutcracker, a classic Christmas Story, is a fairy tale ballet in two acts centered on a family’s Christmas Eve celebration. The story centers on a young girl’s Christmas Eve and her awakening to the wider world and romantic love.

The family party comes to life with lots of dancing, spotlighting on Clara and her brother, Fritz.  As the excitement builds, Uncle Drosselmeyer arrives with a huge box with life-sized dancing dolls from the Far East and a strange wooden soldier, The Nutcracker Doll.  As Clara and Fritz wrestle over the nutcracker doll, it breaks.  Clara is heartbroken.  Uncle Drosselmeyer repairs the doll and infuses it with magic.  The party ends.
Clara is unable to sleep and tiptoes down into the dark living room and is soon surrounded by large mice.  The Mouse King reveals his presence and declares war.  The Nutcracker Prince musters his toy infantry and the cavalry.  A huge battle takes place.  The Mouse King overpowers the Nutcracker Doll.  The magic transforms him now into a handsome boy.  Clara holds his hand and they are transported into a snowy fairyland with dancing snow maidens.  Up into the clouds they go and dance their way down into a beautiful garden.  Clara is introduced to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, The Arabian Princesses, Russian Cossacks, French Ballet Dancers, Chinese Dancers, and Exotic Flowers.
All too soon, the dancing ends and Clara is in the arms of her parents.  As she turns to go back to bed, she catches a glimpse of her Uncle and the Nutcracker Prince.
The composer, Tchaikovsky, made a selection of eight of the more popular pieces before the ballet’s December 1892 premiere, forming what is currently known as the Nutcracker Suite.

The Monterey Peninsula Ballet Theatre, a non-profit 501c3 organization, invites all community dancers to participate in auditions on August 16th-17th, 2019 at The Dance Center in Carmel, CA (26135 Carmel Rancho Blvd. B-6).
